the tape project.
all over london lie discarded music cassettes, chucked from passing cars or just left out with the rubbish. intrigued as to what people no longer considered to have any worth, myself and claire baker began filming this discarded tape - blowing and twisting in the wind, as if trying to attract somebody’s attention.
having filmed the tapes in their found environment, we then gathered up all the tape, spliced it together and wound it onto a spool to create a mix tape of all the different sounds which london threw away.
to bring the music back to modern ears, the video footage now plays on dvd, accompanied by the ‘found’ music.
as part two of the project we would now like to locate the bands whose music was on the cassettes, and organize a series of street gigs for the local communities.
